English, Foreign Language and Philosophy Division

The English, Foreign Language and Philosophy Division oversees a wide variety of course offerings in English, reading, literature, journalism, foreign language, philosophy and religion. The areas within this division include degree options for both the Associate of Arts and a full range of coursework for the general education portion of all degree programs.

In English, the department offers a full range of developmental coursework in reading and writing; the course sequence is intended to help students fully develop college level reading and writing skills. Students will fulfill an important portion of their general education requirements by completing the writing sequence. Students will also find a wide variety of literature courses.

In journalism, the College has an articulated transfer program with the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism. Students also have the opportunity to work on the College’s student newspaper.

Foreign language options are also available at East Central College. In addition to the Spanish sequence offered on campus, the College receives other foreign language courses via distance delivery through a cooperative agreement. The College has increased its foreign language offerings to include French, Chinese, German and others as enrollment warrants.

In philosophy, students may choose from options in philosophy, ethics and religion. Coursework in this area will satisfy general education requirements for all degrees.
