Center for Workforce Development
The Center for Workforce Development, with offices in Washington and Union, works to provide community education and customized training to meet the ever changing needs of our community. The Center for Workforce Development strives to enhance the economic well-being of the people of East Central Missouri by providing outstanding education, training and economic development services to support our local businesses and communities. Center for Workforce Development staff are located at East Central College sites in Union and Washington. Services include employer-focused training, workforce certifications, community education classes and high school equivalency courses.
The Center is managed by an Executive Director; professional staff members manage the Adult Education and Literacy program, Customized Training, Community Education and various grant programs. Workforce Development
The Center for Workforce Development provides short term non-credit and web-based career training. A sampling of available programs include certified nurse assistant, certified medication technician and certified production technician. Staff maintain a collaborative relationship with the Missouri Career Centers to develop short term programs to meet the retraining needs of displaced or underemployed workers. In addition, partnership with local economic development professionals ensures offerings align to the current and future workforce training needs. The Center for Workforce Development serves as an ACT certified WorkKeys assessment center and can help individuals achieve their National Career Readiness Certificate. In addition, there may also be youth services available.

Community Education
Community Education provides non-credit classroom and web-based lifelong learning opportunities for people who want to improve home and community life, and develop or improve leisure activities such as art, physical fitness, and computer skills. Professional continuing education credits are also available.

Adult Education and Literacy (AEL)
The Adult Education & Literacy program provides an opportunity for:
- preparation for the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam
- literacy and basic reading instruction
- reading, writing, mathematics and problem-solving instruction at the secondary level
The AEL program is offered to anyone 17 and older who:
- is not currently enrolled in high school and would like to pursue their High School Equivalency (HSE)
OR
- would like to improve reading, writing, and/or mathematic skills
Adult Education and Literacy classes are scheduled both day and evening for the convenience of those who work and have families. Classes are held on the Union campus and in several area communities. Information on class locations and class schedules is available on the ECC website, or you may call the AEL office at 636-584-6533.
The AEL learning program is individualized to allow students to work at their own levels and pace. Students may work alone, with a teacher, or with other adults in a small group. There is no cost to students for the instruction or for the learning materials provided for their use in the classroom.
In addition to offering AEL classes, the College is an official testing center for the High School Equivalency (HSE) examination. The exam is given at the campus in Union. Pre-registration is required for the HSE exam.

Customized Training
The Customized Training Department at East Central College specializes in training to meet the needs of local business and industry. Customized Training provides a variety of classroom and on-line training options in areas such as manufacturing, equipment, welding, lean, quality, leadership, software, management, accounting, and technology.
The Customized Training staff work closely with representatives of local business and industry in conducting needs assessments and developing industry-specific curriculum and offer:
- Experienced facilitators
- WorkKeys job profiling and assessments
- On-site training at the company’s convenience
- On-campus training sessions
- Credit and non-credit training sessions
The Customized Training staff serves as the Local Education Agency (LEA) for the Missouri Customized Training Program (MCTP) and the New Jobs Training Program (NJTP) through the state of Missouri. This state funded program can help offset a portion of a company’s training costs.
