Social Science Guided Pathway to Success - Associate of Arts

The Social Science pathway offers a broad range of programs within the area of social and behavioral science. As a field, social and behavioral science explores the connections between such fundamental concerns as human development, social behavior and historical analysis. Careers in Social Science include but are not limited to psychology, social work, counseling, political science, economics, and anthropology. Students should discuss the selection of pathway electives with their advisor as well as their intended transfer institution.

Extra-Curricular/Co-curricular Opportunities at ECC
In addition to clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa and Student Government Association, the Psychology Club at East Central College serves to provide an environment for students who express an interest in the Psychological Sciences. The goal of this club is to offer opportunities to increase understanding of the field, provide community service, and enrich students’ social experiences.

History/Political Science pathway trains students to research, analyze and interpret the decisions and actions of the past in order to better understand prior choices, present circumstances and future possibilities. Majors usually specialize in a particular locale, time period or field of study (social, political, economic, diplomatic or cultural history). This social science enhances a person’s ability to think, reason and communicate effectively as well as systematically organize, evaluate and interpret information. Because employers value these traits, those seeking a career in history/political science have a variety of options available to them.

Psychology is a rich and diverse scientific field of study. The discipline examines two important relationships: one between brain function and behavior, and one between the environment and behavior. Individuals who pursue careers in psychology may conduct behavior research, serve as consultants to communities or organizations, or diagnose and treat people with mental health problems. They may assess personality, intelligence, mental health and well-being. The field brings important knowledge and skills to understand diverse cultures. The study of psychology is also good preparation for many other professions. Many employers are interested in the knowledge and skills that psychology majors bring to the workplace.

Sociology studies social life, social change, diverse communities and their interactions, and uses scientific methods to find empirical answers to complex social questions. Studying sociology can help foster creativity, innovation, critical thinking, analytic problem solving and communication skills. The study of sociology provides a foundation for understanding and engaging with the globalizing world and to contribute solutions to difficult social problems.
